Solovki State Historical, Architectural and Natural Museum-Reserve Description: Established in 1967, Solovki Museum maintains and manages 252 historic buildings and the cultural landscapes of the 7 islands of the Solovki Archipelago.
The historic buildings under the museum's management include: the fortified monastery of the 15-19th centuries with external household buildings and churches, Neolithic labyrinths, one of the Northernmost open-air Botanic Gardens and memorial sites, related to the prison camp of the 1920s and a system of lakes, canals and a dock.
Besides its main activities-conservation, restoration, presentation and visitor services-the museuem's priorities include education, promotion of Solovki and community work. The museum's Educational Center offered programs for 500 students from Central and Northern Russia in 2003. |
